Even though the most common causes of hearing loss are excessive noise and ageing, which in both cases lead to dead or damaged hair cells in the inner ear, many people also suffer from hearing impairment caused by a disease.

Diseases such as Otitis Media and Glue Ears can result in temporary medically treatable hearing problems. Diseases such as Otosclerosis and Usher´s syndrome will often result in hearing impairment sometimes these are medically treatable other times a hearing aid will solve the problem. 

Hearing may also be damaged by:

• Tinnitus.
• Meniere´s disease.
• Acoustic Tumors.
• Acoustic Trauma, from a sudden very intense sound. 
• Blow's to the head.
• Multiple Sclerosis.
• Diabetes.

All of the above can lead to permanent hearing loss. Another usually permanent medical condition while not a disease is sudden hearing loss.
