In 1999, the National Council on the Ageing (NCOA) performed a survey among persons over the age of 50 who were suffering from untreated hearing loss. The survey reported that, in comparison to those who were using hearing aids, those who did not were much more likely to report the following:

 Sadness and depression
 Worry and anxiety
 Paranoia
 Less social activity
 Emotional turmoil and insecurity

For those whose hearing losses were then treated said among other benefits they noticed:

 Better relationships with their families
Better feelings about themselves with a higher level of self-esteem
 Improved mental health
 Greater independence and security

The NCOA survey indicated that most hearing aids users reported a significant improvement in the quality of their life since they started wearing hearing aids.

Well over half of the users reported improvements in their domestic relationships and in their level of self-esteem.

42% said that in general their lives had improved, that they felt better mentally and they had a higher degree of self-confidence.
